Summer Skincare

Welcome back good people of the internet! I thought after such a heavy post on Monday I would do a little something lighter for today, and what is better and lighter than skincare! I wanted to do a small round-up of my favorite summer skincare I’ve gotten over this summer. While it may seem a little late to do a summer post, in most places in the Pacific Northwest (and other places too I’m sure) we see summer through September and it doesn’t start until July. So I’ve only had about a month to really through everything and pick some things up to try! Below are all products I have started to use and enjoy through this summer season! They are all products to help keep your skin looking great during summer, but also less heavy products than may be used in the fall or winter. It will help you stay less oily through the warm months and get you through the in-between times! Keep scrolling to see my favorite summer skincare!

Sunscreen- Ok so I have a couple of these that I like that I have used full tubes of with each! Firs one: the Neutrogena sunscreen for sensitive skin. This is the sunscreen I use on all of my tattoos, and my face when I am going to be outside all day long. This is SPF 60 and waterproof so it is best used for a day at the beach, hiking, floating the river, and anything like that where you are going to be in the sun all day. It does have a pretty intense white cast, but odds are if you are goofing off outside all day you don’t care about that. The other two, Tula and Super Goop, are for more everyday wear. The Supergoop that I have used was the tinted glow-screen and I enjoyed it and had no side effects, but it was a massive PAIN to reapply. It pilled and it left streaks when I did reapply. So while it didn’t give me a bad reaction or breakouts, it was hard to reapply and I don’t think I would repurchase this one. It could also have been my skin type or whatever I was wearing under it, but this was my experience with it. But, their standard unseen sunscreen doesn’t seem to have the same issues ( as per reviews I have read) so maybe try that one if you are interested in Supergoop! I think I might give it a whirl. My favorite day to day one is this one by Tula! I am currently awaiting my next shipment of it to come so we will have to settle for this photo for today, but this is a little powerhouse! No white cast, non-greasy, no streaks, easy to reapply, moisturizing, and also protects from blue light! Which makes it the perfect work from home sunscreen.

Face Wash- This is the same face wash I use year-round, but with the extra sunscreen and oil build up on my face during the summer, I am happy to say my favorite face wash has stood up to the challenge and keep my pores clear! Like anyone else, I have had a few breakouts here and there (there is nothing you can do about that) but overall it has done such a great job with the extra muck and oil! Still gentle, still not overly drying, just does a great job.

Moisturizer- This little guy has been such a lifesaver for the summer. It is so lightweight, smells so heavenly, and provides great moisture. I will still use my beloved Grown Alchemist moisturizer at night for some deeper moisture but this is the best product during the day! I do not think it would do what I would need it for fall and winter, but it is so lightweight and nongreasy that it allows me to wear it all day under sunscreen without any extra shine or clogged pores.

Serum- The moisturizer I shared above has hyaluronic acid in it as well as this serum, but I tend to get pretty dry skin so I see no harm in doubling up on the hyaluronic acid. I only use the serum at night after I have washed my face, so I can soak in some extra moisture overnight while I sleep. In the summer, no one wants super heavy products on their face to make them feel extra greasy, and adding in a serum to help with moisture seems to be the cure for that. These serums from Glossier are very lightweight and do not leave you feeling like you are super greasy or like there is a residue.

Lip Balm- This a must for year-round, but being outside in the sun and the wind can make your lips extra chapped and more dry than normal. I love this lip balm for year-round, but it comes in so many amazing scents that you can pick a more summery scent (like this mango one) and switch to something else for a different season. It is the best balm I’ve ever come across.

Face Mask- These are the two I love the most. Both are detoxifying masks that I use about once a week and they can keep my pore nice and clean. Please the washing to get them off gives you some gentle exfoliation which is amazing. They are gentle but extremely effective and I highly recommend both of them! They are both a clay-based mask: the L’Oreal one is mainly charcoal while the Glossier one is more of an antioxidant, leafy greens mask. My skin looks amazing after using both! As you can see with all of my screenshots, I am out of some of my favorite items (damn COVID).

Ice Roller- To be honest, I don’t know what this bad boy does about actual skincare. I don’t think it helps prevent breakouts or anything like that, but you stick it in the freezer for up to four hours before you use it and it helps with inflammation and fine lines. I haven’t been using it long enough to see the fine line results, but it does help with redness and inflammation, and if you use it before bed and if you don’t have AC like me, it helps cool you off.

Free People. I got mine in a FabFitFun box but this was the closest I could find.

The bottom line when it comes to skincare for the summer is that it needs to be minimal, but effective. Lightweight, but effective. I am a skincare minimalist, to begin with, and that only gets even more so in the summertime!
